On 2 April, Spain completed its digital switchover. According to the latest figures published by the Association of Electronic and Telecommunications Industry (ASIMELEC), DTT coverage has reached 98.13% of the population, while DTT penetration reached 83.6% of Spanish homes at the end of February.
Over 28.4 million DTT boxes were sold between March 2003 and February this year. There are 8 public and 24 private channels, but Mediapro’s Gol TV is the sole channel to cover sport and its DTT subscribers already amount to more than 150,000.
A goal for the industry will be to develop quality content because most of the strictly digital channels broadcast old or low quality programs. Furthermore, some of them have rented their space to teleshopping firms, even though this is prohibited by DTT rules.
According to ASIMELEC, the digitalization of TV won’t be completed before 2015, when the 3D DTT, HD DTT, interactive DTT and the distribution of the digital dividend have been concluded.
