Pay-television has finally overtaken advertising as the main revenue stream in the European television sector, satellite has given way to digital-terrestrial television as the biggest digital-television distribution platform and IPTV operators are struggling to generate sustainable levels of subscriber revenues.
These are among the conclusions from Italian consultancy ITMedia Consulting’s eighth annual report on the European television industry,which was published this week.
The report also highlights the emergence of hybrid broadcast-broadband television and argues that pay-television operators need to develop coherent “three screen” strategies – for broadcast, online and mobile distribution – if they are to prosper in a “highly aggressive” environment.
